Labiaplasty or nymphoplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the labia minora (small inside vaginal lips) by removing excess skin. We obtain as a result an improvement in the aesthetic appearance of the labia minora and relief of any discomfort.
The labia minora can appear darker and / or stretched following one or more pregnancies or due to the natural aging of the body. This can also be simply hereditary from your genetic makeup.
Labiaplasty surgery can also be practiced to repair damaged labia due to illness or injury.
During a labiaplasty or nymphoplasty, the labia minora (inner vaginal lips) are shortened so that they are not as long and appear positioned inside the labia majora (outer larger vaginal lips). They may extend beyond the labia majora minimally or not at all.
The decisions for a woman to undergo a labiaplasty include:
- The improvement of the aesthetic appearance.
- The decreased visibility in well fitted clothes (eg. bathing suit).
- Reduce the hyperpigmentation of the free edge.
- Reduce discomfort or pain.
The discomfort, pain or embarrassment that a woman may experience due to having darkened and stretched labia minora are during:
- Sexual intercourse.
- Physical exercise.
- Prolonged sitting posture.
- Wearing tight clothing or a swimsuit.
A labiaplasty is a one-day procedure performed under local anesthesia.
A reduction of the clitoral hood can also be performed at the same time in order to decrease the fullness and protuberance beyond the labia majora. A clitoral hoodectomy may also increase the sexual stimulation of the clitoris (the erectile organ).
You may experience some spotting of blood for a several days after surgery. You may also feel some discomfort due to bruising and swelling. This is normal after surgery.
Discomfort can be managed with pain medication and by changing your position often to relieve any pressure felt while sitting.
Once fully healed, the scars are discreet and generally not visible.
